Job Description:

The Group Manager Safety is responsible for providing advice, guidance and support to the to the General Managers of the sites, site Safety Managers and Superintendents and Heads’ of Department as well as the Head of SHS on all matters affecting safety within their area of responsibility and ensure that working practices adopted by the business comply with Safety legislation and best practice. The role holder will monitor all safety activity to ensure compliance with relevant legal requirements and international standards at all times.



  • Assist the Head of SHS preparing safety strategies and internal policy to deliver on the functional objectives
  • Develop, manage and maintain the company’s Safety Management System (integrated in the SHEC Management System)
  • Develop, implement and monitor group wide safety plans with 3-5 year focus and annual focus to achieve continuous improvement
  • Coordinate group wide safety training
  • Ensure the quality of incident investigations and effective preventative controls
  • Assist in contractor pre contract management reviews and ensure safety is an integral part of all contracts
  • Develop, implement and monitor group wide emergency response plans
  • Assist the Head of SHS in organizing, preparing for and managing external audits on the SHEC Management System
  • Develop action plans, together with the sites, for internal and external audit findings and monitor progress, closing actions only when sufficient evidence supports the effective implementation
  • Set up systems for gathering statistics and GRI data for internal management and external Sustainable Development reports and report on the these data
  • Set up systems for Management Reviews on safety data
  • Any other task that arises during the time of employment relating to SHS as requested by the Head of SHS


Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Relevant Degree in Safety, Master’s Degree will be advantageous
  • Lead Auditor Qualifications (OHSHAS 18001, AS/NZS 4801)
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining SHS Management Systems, Plan-Do-Check-Act
  • Proven experience in the management of safety across multiple sites in the mining sector (minimum 3 years)
  • Proven experience in hands on safety management at site level (minimum 10 years)
  • Good working knowledge of Safety legislation and international standards (IFC and DRC would be advantageous)
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and preferably Isometrix or other databases
  • Ability and willingness to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Motivates sites and gives practical rather than theoretical advice
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, preferably also French
